Whatever you like to do with your free time, Stellenbosch has something to offer for the whole family. The beautiful surroundings offer countless outdoor activities, and because Stellenbosch is a university town and cultural centre, there is no shortage of night life entertainment.

The Stellenbosch Area Is Golf Heaven!

Stellenbosch Golf Course is the 4th oldest golf club in South Africa and is over 100 years old. It is an 18-hole, par 72 course with a championship layout. The setting is magnificent.

De Zalze Golf Club is an 18-hole course set in the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate. It was designed by Peter Matkovich who created a course with a stunning setting that places a premium on accuracy.

Devonvale Golf Course is spectacular 18-hole championship golf course popular with locals and international visitors alike. It has perfectly manicured kikuyu fairways and bent greens, and a large dam in the centre. Also set in the peace of the winelands.

Erinvale Golf Course is on land that was bought by the owner of Lourensford Estate to save it from an unscrupulous developer. He and environmentalist Ian Player invited Gary Player to design a course that was appropriate for the area.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

There are scores of hiking and biking trails in the Stellenbosch area, in vineyards, botanical gardens, nature reserves and the mountains.

The Vineyard Hiking Trail is a full day’s walk between Stellenbosch and Kuils River, through forests, vineyards and olive groves. Delvera Farm offers three different day vineyard and mountain walks, from easy to fairly difficult. It is also popular for mountain biking.

Devon Valley has two challenging hikes and a great family walk, with beautiful views, which takes an hour and is suitable for young children. The 9800 ha Jonkershoek Nature Reserve has  hikes from 3km to 18km. Cape Leopard, Black Eagle, Baboon and Klipspringer all live in the reserve. Hiking in nature at its best!

Mountain Biking and Trail Running

There is a wide variety of mountain biking trails and trail running trails in and around Stellenbosch, the most well-known of which is Dirtopia, which offers biking and running events from beginners to advanced. Stellenbosch is also home to the popular Vista Trail Run.

Horse Riding and Carriage Rides

Spier Vineyards, outside of Stellenbosch, offer horse riding through the vineyards, as well as specialized rides. You can also take a romantic carriage ride through the vineyards, and if you’re planning on staying in the area, attend the riding school.

Aviation

The Stellenbosch Flying Club, one of the most beautiful airfields in South Africa, is located in the midst of the scenic mountains and vineyards outside of Stellenbosch. The club is open to aviators, and aviation enthusiasts from all walks of life to go and enjoy the aeroplanes, stunning views and delicious food.

For The Kids

In the region are Butterfly World Butterfly Park, Drakenstein Lion Park which is home to lions rescued from zoos and circuses, Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm, Monkey Town Monkey Jungle Fun Park, Stellenbosch Toy & Miniature Museum, The Giraffe House Animal Park.  All within a stone’s throw of Stellenbosch!

Spas

Stellenbosch is famous for the spas in the region. These include Camelot Spa at Spier Wine Estate, Isa Carstens Wellness Sanctuary, Mangwanani Zevenwacht, Simply Spa at Lanzerac Wine Estate, The Hydro at Stellenbosch, and WedgeView Country House & Spa.

Nightlife

The Dorp Street Theatre Café in central Stellenbosch always has a great lineup of local musicians. Nightclubs and bars in Stellenbosch are Bohemia, Brazen Head Irish Pub, Cubana, De Akker, De Lapa, Esquire Cigar and Whiskey Lounge, Mystic Boer and The Terrace.

Endler Hall, if you prefer classical music, is at the University of Stellenbosch Conservatory of Music. It has high quality concerts year-round, performed by professionals and students.

The Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, on the Oude Libertas Wine Estate, is a magificent open air theatre with outstanding shows, from opera to dance to jazz. Truly a fabulous way to spend a memorable evening.
